Wind Check: What Good Gift Have I Been Too Busy to Receive?
Issue 19 Companion Reflection
Clarity in the Wind: Don’t Rush Past the Gift
This week’s Clarity in the Wind invited us to consider something we may not practice as readily as responsibility, discernment, and obedience: receiving what is already good.
Ecclesiastes 3:12–13 reminds us that amid the changing seasons and limitations of life, there is also a place for rejoicing and enjoying what God has given. This Wind Check is an opportunity to notice one of those gifts before moving on to whatever comes next.
Take a Few Quiet Minutes
Think about your life as it is right now. Identify one good gift that is already present. It might be a person, an ordinary pleasure, meaningful work, rest, beauty, an accomplishment, an answered prayer, or simply a peaceful moment you have not fully noticed.
Stay with just one.
What good gift is already present in my life that I may have been moving too quickly to receive?
What has kept me from fully noticing or enjoying it?
What would it look like to receive this gift without immediately turning it into another goal, responsibility, or assignment?
How can I thank God for it today?
A Simple Practice
Before today ends, spend a few minutes receiving the gift you identified.
If it is a person, be present with them. If it is an accomplishment, acknowledge it before setting another goal. If it is rest, receive the rest. If it is something beautiful or enjoyable, experience it without asking how to make the moment useful.
There is nothing else you need to accomplish with this exercise.
Receive What Is Here
There will always be something else requiring our attention. Faithfulness includes tending to our responsibilities, but it can also include recognizing the good that is already present within the life we are living.
You don’t have to make the gift become something more before you are allowed to enjoy it. Receive it. Give thanks.
