Clarity in the Wind | Issue 24 Wind Check
Sometimes the way we approach God reveals more about our expectations than we realize.
We may know that Scripture calls Him our Father, yet still struggle to approach Him with the confidence that comes through our adoption in Christ. We may believe He loves us while feeling that we must continually prove ourselves worthy of His acceptance. And sometimes our understanding of fatherhood has been shaped more by human experiences than by what Scripture reveals about God.
Romans 8:15 reminds us that we have received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” This relationship is not something we establish through our performance. It is a gift made possible through Jesus Christ.
But understanding that truth and learning to live in light of it are not always the same thing.
This Week’s Reflection
This week’s Wind Check invites us to examine four areas of our relationship with the Father.
Relationship
Through Christ, we have been received into God’s family. Yet we can still approach Him as though His acceptance depends upon how well we’ve performed.
Consider: When I approach God, am I resting in what Christ has accomplished, or am I still trying to earn His acceptance?
Expectations
Our experiences with earthly fathers and other authority figures can influence what we expect from God. Those experiences may explain some of our assumptions, but they cannot establish who God is.
Consider: What expectations about fatherhood might be influencing how I understand God’s character? Which of those expectations need to be examined in light of Scripture?
Reverence
Knowing God as Father does not diminish His holiness. We can approach Him with confidence while continuing to honor and obey Him.
Consider: Am I learning to approach the Father with both confidence and reverence? Have I confused reverence with fear of rejection?
Belonging
Our service to God should flow from our relationship with Him, not become the measure of that relationship.
Consider: Am I serving God from the security of knowing I belong to Him, or am I allowing my accomplishments to determine how I see my relationship with Him?
Bring It Into Focus
As you reflect on these questions, consider whether there is an assumption about God that needs to be reconsidered.
What has Scripture revealed about the Father that challenges something you’ve believed or expected?
You don’t have to resolve every question today. Begin by identifying one area where your understanding needs to come into greater agreement with God’s Word.
A Next Faithful Step
Return to Romans 8:14–17 this week. Read the passage slowly, paying attention to what Paul teaches about adoption, fear, and the witness of the Holy Spirit.
Then identify one practical way you can begin responding to God according to what Scripture reveals rather than what your experiences may have taught you to expect.

Sometimes clarity begins when we allow God’s Word to correct what we thought we already knew about Him.
