Wind Check: Before You Decide What You Know

Sometimes what we know is accurate, but our understanding is still incomplete.

Take a Moment to Reflect

Have you ever formed an opinion about a situation, only to discover later that there was more to the story?

Sometimes the information we receive is accurate, but it doesn’t provide the complete picture. We may understand what someone said or did without understanding the circumstances surrounding their decision. And when we fill those gaps with assumptions, we can become confident about conclusions we haven’t fully examined.

In this week’s Clarity in the Wind, we considered the wisdom found in Proverbs 18:13 and Proverbs 18:17. These passages remind us of the importance of hearing a matter before responding and recognizing that an initial account may not provide everything we need to make a responsible judgment.

This week’s Wind Check invites us to examine how we process information, interpret circumstances, and respond when our understanding is incomplete.

The goal isn’t to question everything or become hesitant about every decision. It’s to develop the humility and wisdom to recognize the difference between what we know, what we assume, and what we still need to understand.

This Week’s Reflection

1. What do I know, and what am I assuming?

Think about a situation where you’ve formed a conclusion. What facts can you establish, and what parts of your understanding are based on interpretation?

2. Have I heard enough to make a responsible judgment?

Is there another question worth asking or a perspective that deserves consideration before you decide what you believe?

3. Am I willing to reconsider what I believe?

If new information challenges your understanding, are you willing to examine it fairly, even when doing so is uncomfortable?

The digital version allows you to type your reflections, save your progress on your device, and download or print your responses.

Before You Go

Not every situation requires an immediate conclusion. Sometimes wisdom calls us to listen a little longer, ask another question, or acknowledge that our understanding may still be developing.

As you reflect this week, consider whether there’s a situation where you’ve become more certain than the information warrants.

You may not need to change your conclusion. You may simply need to examine how you reached it.

Clarity doesn’t always come from receiving more information. Sometimes it begins with recognizing the limits of what we already know.
