Wind Check: What If You’re Not Behind?
Issue 14 Companion Reflection
Clarity in the Wind: What If You’re Not Behind?
Sometimes another person’s progress can quietly change how we interpret our own lives.
We see someone moving forward, receiving an opportunity, reaching a milestone, or entering a season we thought we would have reached by now. Before long, waiting begins to feel like falling behind.
But before deciding that something has gone wrong, there is a more important question to ask:
Who gave me the timeline I’m using to measure my life?
In John 21, Jesus had just spoken personally to Peter about his future and told him, “Follow Me.” Peter then looked at John and asked, “But Lord, what about this man?” (John 21:21, NKJV).
Jesus responded:
“If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.”
John 21:22, NKJV
Jesus did not give Peter information about John so Peter could compare their futures. He redirected Peter to his own responsibility: You follow Me.
That same redirection can help us examine our own lives.
This Week’s Reflection
This Wind Check is not designed simply to reassure you that you are not behind. Sometimes there are places where fear, procrastination, poor stewardship, or disobedience have kept us from responding to what God has already made clear.
That requires honesty.
But comparison can also create false urgency. We can begin measuring our lives against someone else’s pace, opportunities, progress, or expectations and assume that because our path looks different, something must be wrong.
This week’s Wind Check will help you examine both possibilities.
As you work through it, you will consider:
Where you currently feel behind
What timeline or expectation you are using to measure your life
Where that expectation came from
Whether comparison or genuine conviction is shaping your perspective
What God has already made clear to you
What faithful obedience looks like in this season
The goal is not to convince yourself that everything is fine.
The goal is clarity.
Take the Wind Check
Set aside a few quiet minutes with the Lord. Bring the places where you have felt rushed, delayed, disappointed, uncertain, or tempted to compare your life with someone else’s.
Ask the Holy Spirit to show you what is true.
Where something needs to change, be willing to respond.
Where you have been carrying a timeline God never gave you, be willing to release it.
And then return to the simple responsibility Jesus gave Peter:
“You follow Me.”
Before You Go
Carry this question with you throughout the week:
Am I responding to what God is actually asking of me, or reacting to where I think I should be by now?
Before you decide you are behind, make sure you are not measuring your life by a timeline God never gave you.
