Wind Check: Discernment or Suspicion?

Issue 16 Companion Reflection
Clarity in the Wind: What If You’re Calling It Discernment, but It’s Really Suspicion?

“Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts.”
1 Corinthians 4:5, NKJV

There is a difference between paying attention to what you observe and deciding you know what someone else is thinking or intending. Discernment allows us to recognize patterns, examine fruit, exercise caution, and respond wisely. Suspicion often goes a step further by filling in what we do not actually know.

This week’s Clarity in the Wind invited us to consider an important question: What if what we are calling discernment has begun to cross over into suspicion?

The goal is not to make you second-guess every spiritual impression or ignore something that genuinely requires your attention. Instead, this Wind Check will help you slow down long enough to separate what you know, what you have observed, and what you may have assumed.

As you work through it, bring one specific relationship, situation, or decision before the Lord. You may discover that you do not need to understand another person’s motives in order to know what wisdom requires of you.

Take about 10–15 quiet minutes to work through the reflection, then spend a few additional moments in prayer before moving on.

Before You Begin

Ask the Holy Spirit for the humility to recognize both what He is showing you and what He has not shown you. The goal is not simply to determine whether your perception is right or wrong. It is to become more faithful in how you handle what you perceive.

You don’t have to know what’s in someone’s heart to know what wisdom requires of you.
